Grad2Teach is offering an exciting Graduate Trainee Primary Teacher – HLTA & PE Leader opportunity at a welcoming primary school in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

This salaried role allows you to begin your journey as a Phase One trainee, gaining valuable whole-school experience as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) while supporting and developing physical education and school sport. At the same time, you will work towards your Level 4 qualification, with a clear pathway to Phase Two, PGCE and QTS.

The school is a supportive and community-focused environment where staff work collaboratively to provide engaging learning experiences and encourage children to develop academically, socially and physically.

As our HLTA – PE & Sports Leader, you will play a vital role in supporting teaching and learning while leading and developing high-quality PE and sports provision across the school.

You will:

  • Deliver engaging PE lessons that inspire participation and achievement

  • Provide whole-class cover to support teaching and learning

  • Promote inclusion, confidence and positive behaviour in lessons and activities

  • Lead extracurricular sports clubs and competitions

  • Support pupils’ wellbeing and physical development

  • Work collaboratively with staff, pupils, parents and the wider community

  • Help create a safe, stimulating and active learning environment

  • Support teaching and learning across the primary phase (EYFS, KS1 and/or KS2)

  • Deliver small-group interventions and occasionally lead lessons under guidance

This is a varied and rewarding role combining classroom support, leadership and sports development. Experience delivering PE or leading sports activities in a school or youth setting is highly desirable.

This role is ideal for a graduate who wants to earn while they train, gain meaningful classroom experience from day one, and develop leadership experience in primary PE and school sport.

About You – Candidate Profile

You may be a recent graduate, sports coach, teaching assistant or aspiring educator with a passion for primary education and physical activity.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is a motivated aspiring primary teacher / graduate trainee

  • Has a strong interest or degree in Sport, Physical Education, or a related field

  • Has experience working with children (school, sports coaching, tutoring or youth work)

  • Is enthusiastic, reflective and eager to grow into an excellent teacher

  • Demonstrates commitment to high standards, teamwork and whole-school values

  • Can build positive relationships with young children and inspire them to be active and engaged

  • Is keen to develop leadership skills in primary PE and school sport

  • Wants to develop their teaching practice through high-quality mentoring and training

Training & Progression with Grad2Teach

This role follows Grad2Teach’s fully salaried, two-phase teacher training model:

Phase One – Level 4 & Foundational Training

  • Complete your Level 4 NCFE customised qualification while working in school

  • Training aligned to the Core Content Framework (CCF) and Teachers' Standards

  • Learn through guided practice, observations, professional learning sessions and in-school experience

  • Gradually increase teaching responsibility as your skills develop

Phase Two – PGCE & QTS (Coventry University)

Subject to successful progression, Phase Two includes:

  • Independent teaching responsibility 

  • Completion of a PGCE with QTS through Coventry University (NITE)

  • Ongoing mentoring, assessment and development towards meeting all Teachers’ Standards

This structured progression ensures you gain the skills, confidence and accreditation needed to begin your career as a fully qualified primary teacher.
