Grad2Teach is offering an exciting Graduate Trainee Teacher – Science opportunity at a supportive secondary school in St Albans, Hertfordshire. This salaried Phase One position provides the opportunity to gain valuable school-based experience while studying towards your Level 4 qualification, with a clear progression route into Phase Two, PGCE and QTS.

You will join a dedicated Science department where you will work alongside experienced teachers and mentors to develop your classroom practice, subject knowledge and confidence.

Whether your particular strength is Biology, Chemistry or Physics, this is an opportunity to develop your teaching skills within a collaborative and supportive school environment.

As a Grad2Teach trainee, you will:

  • Support teaching and learning across the Science department
  • Work with pupils across Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Assist with practical experiments, investigations and demonstrations
  • Support individual pupils and small groups to improve their scientific understanding
  • Help prepare lessons, resources and practical activities
  • Develop your classroom management and teaching skills
  • Observe experienced teachers and receive regular feedback and mentoring
  • Contribute to Science enrichment, clubs and wider school activities
  • Take on increasing teaching responsibility as your confidence develops

About You – Candidate Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual who is passionate about Science and working with young people.

You will:

  • Be a motivated aspiring Science teacher / graduate trainee
  • Hold, or be working towards, a degree in Science or a related subject
  • Have a genuine enthusiasm for Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics
  • Be keen to develop your subject knowledge and teaching practice
  • Be confident communicating scientific ideas to young people
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and colleagues
  • Demonstrate resilience, organisation and a willingness to learn
  • Be committed to high standards of teaching, learning and student achievement
  • Be reflective and eager to develop through mentoring and professional training

Experience working with young people through tutoring, coaching, schools, youth work or similar settings would be advantageous.

Training & Progression with Grad2Teach

This role follows Grad2Teach's fully salaried, two-phase teacher training model.

Phase One – Level 4 & Foundational Training

  • Complete your Level 4 NCFE customised qualification while working in school
  • Training aligned to the Core Content Framework (CCF) and Teachers' Standards
  • Learn through guided practice, lesson observations, mentoring and professional learning sessions
  • Develop your classroom management and teaching skills through practical experience
  • Receive ongoing support from experienced teachers and Grad2Teach mentors
  • Build confidence and take on increasing responsibility as you progress

Phase Two – PGCE & QTS (Coventry University)

Subject to successful progression, Phase Two includes:

  • Teaching responsibility of up to 18 hours per week
  • Completion of a PGCE with QTS through Coventry University (NITE)
  • Ongoing mentoring, assessment and professional development
  • Development towards meeting all Teachers' Standards

This structured pathway provides a clear route from trainee to fully qualified Science teacher.
