Trainee Primary Teacher

This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring teacher or career changer who wants to develop their skills in a real school environment before progressing towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Through Grad2Teach’s structured, school-based teacher training programme, you will begin in Phase One, completing a Level 4 NCFE Customised Qualification alongside your salaried role. You will then have the opportunity to progress into formal Initial Teacher Training during Phase Two.

About the Role

As a Phase One Trainee Primary Teacher, you will become an active member of the school community while gradually developing the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to become an effective classroom teacher.

Rather than immediately taking responsibility for a full teaching timetable, Phase One allows you to gain meaningful classroom experience while developing your practice through structured training. Grad2Teach’s programme is designed to combine salaried, in-school experience with professional development and preparation for progression into teacher training.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting teaching and learning across the primary age range.
• Working with individual pupils and small groups to support progress.
• Supporting the class teacher with lesson preparation and classroom activities.
• Developing effective behaviour management strategies.
• Helping to create an inclusive, engaging and positive learning environment.
• Observing experienced primary teachers and applying successful approaches to your own practice.
• Gradually taking on increased classroom and teaching responsibility as your confidence develops.
• Building evidence and reflecting on your professional development throughout Phase One.

This is an ideal graduate teaching role for someone who wants practical experience rather than moving immediately into a traditional university-led teacher training route.

Previous experience working with children or young people is beneficial, but your attitude, potential and commitment to becoming an excellent teacher are equally important.

Training & Progression

Grad2Teach provides a structured pathway designed to help aspiring teachers develop progressively rather than being expected to teach independently from day one.

During Phase One, you will undertake a Level 4 NCFE Customised Qualification while gaining salaried, school-based experience. Training and professional development focus on key areas of classroom practice, including planning, behaviour, assessment, safeguarding and effective teaching, while supporting your development against the Teachers’ Standards and relevant teacher-training framework.

As your confidence and classroom experience grow, you can progress into Phase Two, where you move towards greater independent teaching responsibility and formal Initial Teacher Training.

Grad2Teach supports recognised routes to QTS, including the PGCE with QTS delivered through Coventry University’s National Institute of Teaching and Education (NITE). The programme is designed to enable trainees to continue developing within their school while working towards becoming confident, fully qualified teachers.
