About the Role

As a Phase One Trainee Mathematics Teacher, you will become part of the school's Mathematics department and develop your skills within a real secondary school environment.

Rather than immediately taking on the pressure of a full teaching timetable, Phase One is designed to build your confidence and classroom experience progressively. Grad2Teach trainees remain salaried and active within their school while completing structured training and an accredited Level 4 NCFE Customised Qualification.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting Mathematics lessons across the secondary age range.
• Working with individuals and small groups to strengthen numeracy, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
• Providing classroom and intervention support within the Mathematics department.
• Developing confidence in behaviour management and classroom routines.
• Supporting or covering lessons as your experience and confidence develop.
• Learning how to plan, deliver and assess effective Mathematics teaching.
• Observing experienced teachers and applying effective teaching strategies in your own practice.
• Gradually taking on increased teaching responsibility in preparation for Phase Two.

Colchester has an active secondary Mathematics education landscape, with current local vacancies spanning KS3, KS4 and KS5 Mathematics.

About You

We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate trainee teacher who is serious about developing a long-term career in Mathematics education.

You could be a recent graduate, an experienced teaching assistant or cover supervisor, or a career changer looking for a structured route into teaching.

You should:

• Hold a degree and have a strong interest in Mathematics and education.
• Be enthusiastic about helping young people develop confidence in Mathematics.
• Have strong numeracy, communication and organisational skills.
• Be reliable, professional and willing to learn from experienced colleagues.
• Be comfortable working with secondary-aged pupils.
• Be reflective and open to feedback as you develop your classroom practice.
• Have the ambition to progress towards becoming a fully qualified Mathematics Teacher.

Previous school experience is beneficial, but candidates with transferable experience and a genuine commitment to becoming a teacher are also encouraged to apply.

Training & Progression

Grad2Teach provides a salaried, school-based route into teaching, allowing you to work, train and develop your classroom practice at the same time.

Phase One – Build Your Teaching Foundations

During Phase One, you will develop your classroom experience while completing a Level 4 NCFE Customised Qualification alongside your salaried school role. Training develops the practical knowledge required for effective teaching, including areas such as lesson planning, behaviour, assessment, inclusion and professional practice.

Your development is supported through structured training informed by the Core Content Framework (CCF) and Teachers' Standards, helping you build the knowledge, evidence and confidence needed for greater classroom responsibility.

Phase Two – Progress Towards Qualified Teacher Status

Once you are ready to progress, Phase Two moves you towards independent teaching and formal Initial Teacher Training.

The Grad2Teach programme offers recognised progression routes including a PGCE with QTS through Coventry University, alongside other routes depending on experience, eligibility and circumstances.

For trainees following the PGCE pathway, Phase Two involves increased responsibility for your own teaching timetable alongside university training, mentoring, assignments and observations. Successful completion leads to a PGCE with QTS, preparing you to begin your career as a qualified Mathematics Teacher.
