Trainee Design and Technology Teacher

Are you a graduate with a passion for Design & Technology, Product Design, Engineering, Resistant Materials or a related subject? Grad2Teach is recruiting an aspiring Design & Technology Teacher to begin a salaried teacher training journey within a supportive secondary school in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical classroom experience while completing a Level 4 qualification during Phase One, before progressing towards formal Initial Teacher Training and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

About the Role

As a Phase One Trainee Design & Technology Teacher, you will be employed in a school-based role while developing the skills and confidence required to become an effective secondary teacher.

Working alongside experienced teachers, you will gain valuable experience supporting pupils across the Design & Technology curriculum. Depending on your experience and the school's needs, you may support areas including Product Design, Resistant Materials, Engineering, Graphics and practical workshop-based learning.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting Design & Technology lessons across the secondary age range.
• Working with individuals and small groups to develop practical and theoretical understanding.
• Supporting pupils with designing, making, evaluating and problem-solving activities.
• Assisting with lesson preparation, classroom organisation and practical resources.
• Developing behaviour management and classroom communication skills.
• Gradually taking on increased responsibility for planning and delivering learning.
• Observing experienced teachers and reflecting on effective classroom practice.
• Building the evidence, subject pedagogy and professional skills required for progression into Phase Two.

Design & Technology remains an established secondary teacher-training subject within Lincolnshire, providing an excellent environment in which to develop your specialist teaching practice.

About You

We are looking for a motivated graduate trainee who is enthusiastic about developing a career in secondary education.

You could be a recent graduate, a career changer with relevant industry experience, or someone already working in education who is ready to progress towards becoming a qualified teacher.

You will ideally:

• Hold a degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Engineering, Architecture, Manufacturing, Graphic Design or another relevant discipline.
• Have a genuine interest in working with young people.
• Be enthusiastic about practical, creative and technical education.
• Be confident, reliable and willing to learn.
• Have strong communication and organisational skills.
• Be able to build positive professional relationships with pupils and colleagues.
• Be committed to developing your subject knowledge and teaching practice.
• Have the ambition to progress towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Relevant school or youth experience is valuable, but Grad2Teach's structured pathway is designed to help aspiring teachers build their classroom experience progressively.

Training & Progression

Grad2Teach provides a structured, salaried and school-based route into teaching, allowing you to earn while developing your skills in a real secondary school environment.

Phase One – Build Your Teaching Foundations

During Phase One, you will complete an NCFE-accredited Level 4 customised qualification alongside your salaried school placement. Training is practical and reflective, helping you develop your understanding of areas including lesson planning, behaviour, assessment, inclusion and effective teaching techniques.

Your training and classroom development will be mapped against the Teachers' Standards and informed by the Core Content Framework (CCF), giving you the foundations needed for formal teacher training.

Phase One allows you to develop in the classroom without immediately taking responsibility for a full teaching timetable.

Phase Two – Progress Towards QTS

Once you have demonstrated that you are ready to progress, Phase Two moves you into formal Initial Teacher Training with increased responsibility for your own classes.

Grad2Teach supports routes including the PGCE with QTS through Coventry University's National Institute of Teaching and Education (NITE). Successful trainees on this route work towards a PGCE, QTS and 60 Master's-level credits while continuing to develop their practice in school.

The result is a gradual transition from graduate trainee to confident, independently practising teacher.
