As an HLTA, you will take on a greater level of responsibility within the classroom, supporting teaching and learning, working with groups of pupils and, where appropriate, taking responsibility for lessons or classes under the direction of the class teacher.

This role is particularly suited to a graduate who wants to gain substantial classroom experience before progressing into a full teaching role.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting teaching and learning across the primary phase
  • Delivering planned lessons or learning activities when required
  • Working with individual pupils and small groups to support progress
  • Providing targeted intervention and additional learning support
  • Supporting classroom management and maintaining high expectations
  • Covering classes and leading learning activities when appropriate
  • Working closely with class teachers and the wider school team
  • Preparing and adapting learning resources
  • Monitoring pupil engagement and providing feedback to teachers
  • Developing your understanding of planning, assessment and effective teaching
  • Taking on increasing responsibility as your skills and confidence develop

The school will provide a supportive environment in which you can develop your classroom practice while gaining the experience needed to progress towards qualified teacher status.

About You – Candidate Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and capable graduate who is committed to pursuing a career in Primary teaching.

You should have:

  • A genuine passion for working with children and supporting their education
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The confidence to lead learning and manage a classroom effectively
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils
  • A calm, patient and encouraging approach
  • Strong organisation and time-management skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a wider school team
  • A willingness to learn, reflect and respond positively to feedback
  • High expectations of yourself and the pupils you work with
  • Resilience, enthusiasm and a professional attitude

Previous experience working in a primary school or education setting would be highly advantageous, particularly experience of leading lessons, covering classes or working at HLTA level.

Most importantly, you should be ready to take responsibility, develop your practice and demonstrate the potential to become an effective Primary Teacher.
