Grad2Teach is offering an exciting Primary Graduate Trainee Teacher opportunity at a partner school in Potters Bar. This salaried Phase One position will see you working as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) while beginning your teacher training journey.
As an HLTA, you will take on a greater level of responsibility within the classroom, supporting teaching and learning, working with groups of pupils and, where appropriate, taking responsibility for lessons or classes under the direction of the class teacher.
This role is particularly suited to a graduate who wants to gain substantial classroom experience before progressing into a full teaching role.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting teaching and learning across the primary phase
- Delivering planned lessons or learning activities when required
- Working with individual pupils and small groups to support progress
- Providing targeted intervention and additional learning support
- Supporting classroom management and maintaining high expectations
- Covering classes and leading learning activities when appropriate
- Working closely with class teachers and the wider school team
- Preparing and adapting learning resources
- Monitoring pupil engagement and providing feedback to teachers
- Developing your understanding of planning, assessment and effective teaching
- Taking on increasing responsibility as your skills and confidence develop

Previous experience working in a primary school or education setting would be highly advantageous, particularly experience of leading lessons, covering classes or working at HLTA level.
Most importantly, you should be ready to take responsibility, develop your practice and demonstrate the potential to become an effective Primary Teacher.
Training & Progression with Grad2Teach
Phase One – HLTA & Level 4 Training
During Phase One, you will work in school as an HLTA, gaining extensive practical classroom experience while completing a Level 4 NCFE customised qualification.
Your training will include:
- Training aligned with the Core Content Framework (CCF) and Teachers’ Standards
- Guided classroom practice and observations of experienced teachers
- Regular mentoring and professional learning
- Developing effective behaviour and classroom management strategies
- Understanding how children learn and develop
- Developing teaching, assessment and questioning skills
- Building confidence through increased classroom responsibility
Successful completion of Phase One provides a clear progression route into Phase Two, where you can work towards your PGCE with QTS.
Phase Two – PGCE & QTS
Subject to successful progression, Phase Two provides the opportunity to:
- Take on teaching responsibility of up to 18 hours per week
- Complete a PGCE with QTS through Coventry University (NITE)
- Continue receiving school-based mentoring and support
- Develop your teaching practice through structured training and assessment
- Work towards meeting all Teachers’ Standards
- Progress towards becoming a fully qualified Primary Teacher
